Re: Prime Time Linux... NO !

Friday, December 06, 2013

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have an old Compaq computer with Ubuntu loaded for messing around. I left it set up in our family room for the rest of the family in the hope that my family will leave my 'work' computer alone. And they have been using it, but...

We've discovered what appears to be an ancient bug that is ... unacceptable. Every now and then the left mouse button just hangs. Everything else works but no left mouse button. I did find a 'simple' reset (ctrl-alt-F1, ctrl-alt-F7), but, really? This bug appears to be pretty well known. You can google 'left mouse button stops working linux' and see the 25,8000,000 results. How can this bug still exist on 8 year old hardware and this be considered a 'mainstream' operating system? It can't. This helps explain why Linux is not, and will not be mainstream. You can rationalize all you want but any non-tech person does not have the knowledge or the patience to find the work around - nor should they have to. Imagine you're driving a car and the brake just stops working every now and then...
